The Union Jack was first introduced as the flag of Great Britain in 1606 when King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England.
Originally known as the Union Flag, the use of the name Union Jack came from the Jack flag which was a small version of the Union Flag flown on the bowsprit of all British merchant and naval ships during the 17th century.
